Meet our newest BrawlStar – Rukus! A name she has carried over from her other love – DJ’ing.
Before smashing the levels and becoming a bouting skater, Rukus showed us her skills on the deck and was our resident muso, but now it is all ipod docks as she hits the track and skates it out with the rest of us.
Teams: Zombetties and now a BrawlStar!
Positions: Whilst not afraid of the jammer star especially in scrims and home games, Rukus is typically a blocker.
How did you get into derby and how long have you been playing?
ARHHHHH Roller Derby! It really is every girls dream!!! The fact that being aggressive, talented, hot and sweaty all in one place is amazing. Derby really doesn’t discriminate either is my biggest reason. You can be a little weird and different as well. I joined roller derby for all of these reasons and more., but if it wasn’t for my boyfriend dragging me down to the freshmeat intake, I probably wouldn’t have been here and I’m so glad he did.
I’ve been skating for 1.5 years
Do you have a pre-bout ritual?
Music, my first love
What is your pre-derby sports/skating background?
I had never skated before in my life. I was a wall hugger (giggles). If you want something so
bad, you will eventually get it.
Who is your derby idol?
A mash up of talented chicks but there’s to many to name.
Please share your best derby moments:
Accomplishing my goal I set at the start of the year: Getting my green star, making the Brawlstar team and reaching boom state! The best moment so far is getting play time at boom state!!!
What is the best piece of advice you could give and up and coming derby player?
Train hard in and out of derby. Respect and trust your team mates, have fun and above all stay humble!
